Regarding the Lending of Tablets to Elementary and Junior High School Students
We are grateful to be able to use the tablets, but currently, they are being used for quite long hours under the pretext of homework.
I don't think it is necessary to take them home every day, and I would like the charging to be done at the school's storage, like in other cities, so that daily take-home can be eliminated.
We would like homework assignments that do not require the use of tablets.
If it is absolutely necessary to take the tablets home, we would like the settings to be strict so that children cannot freely install apps, and additionally, we want screen time limits set so that the tablets become unusable after 30 minutes to an hour, and are disabled after 9 p.m. We ask that the city centrally manage this for both elementary and junior high school students.
If this is not done, the children will not be able to manage it on their own, and parents, who are working, cannot constantly monitor them.
At this rate, there is a serious concern about the children becoming digitally addicted.
We kindly ask for your prompt response and consideration.
Response
In our city, regarding the one tablet device per student, we have established an environment that utilizes LTE connections, enabling learning activities not only within schools but also at home and other locations. Additionally, during class closures or temporary school closures due to infectious diseases, we use these devices to secure learning opportunities by conducting online classes and homerooms. For these reasons, the tablets are not kept at school at all times but are taken home and used for learning.
Upon confirming with the Board of Education, tablets are, in principle, to be taken home. They have instructed schools to provide appropriate consideration as needed, taking into account factors such as the children's developmental stages, the necessity of learning including home study, and the self-management of usage time, which are important for social independence. Additionally, screen time is also being discussed as an agenda item at the principals' meetings.
