About PET Bottle Caps
Currently, in Inagi City, plastic bottle caps are treated as plastic waste, but bottle caps have the value of one vaccine dose per 2 kg. It may be difficult for the city to collect them, but some supermarkets do collect them.
We hope to inform the public through publicity that these 2kg will become a single dose of vaccine, and that it can be used meaningfully.
Response
The city aims to address global environmental issues by protecting limited resources, reducing the burden on future generations, and striving to create a "sustainable society." From April 2023, container and packaging plastic waste, including plastic bags and bottle caps, as well as product plastic waste collected in the new designated collection bags, are not incinerated but sorted and fully recycled.
Regarding this matter, we have also explained our approach to the Inagi City Council and received their understanding. As a result of the cooperation of the citizens in sorting waste, approximately 850 tons were collected in fiscal year 2023, leading not only to waste reduction but also to further promotion of recycling.
Regarding the initiative where business operators independently collect plastic bottle caps and prepare vaccines, this is conducted based on the intentions of the business operators and participants, and there are currently no plans to publicize this through city public relations or other means.
