Foster parents are needed

In Tokyo, approximately 4,000 children live in child welfare facilities, infant homes, and foster homes due to parental illness or abuse.
Since children in foster homes can live in an environment close to a family setting, more foster parents are needed.

  • Requirements for becoming a foster parent include being motivated by the best interests of the child, not being in financial distress, and having an appropriate home and living environment.
  • There is no age limit when applying to become a foster parent. About 60% of foster parents are aged 50 or older.
  • The custody period varies from a few days to long-term.
  • There are types such as "adoptive foster parents" who enter into special adoption agreements, and "care foster parents" who do not.
  • During the placement period with "care foster parents," child-rearing expenses are paid.

Information Session

The Tamafos (Tama Fostering Agency), which is responsible for the foster parent system, regularly holds information sessions (system explanations, experiences shared by foster parents, individual consultations for applicants, etc.).
Anyone who wishes to become a foster parent, is interested in the system, or has participated before can join.
