Background and Purpose
In recent years, the number of emergency transports and deaths due to heatstroke has remained at a high level, so the Ministry of the Environment and the Japan Meteorological Agency have been operating the "Heatstroke Warning Alert" nationwide since fiscal year 2021.
The "Heat Stroke Warning Alert" is information based on the Wet Bulb Globe Temperature (WBGT) index, issued when an extremely high risk of heat stroke is predicted due to hot environmental conditions. It aims to raise awareness of heat exposure and effectively encourage the public to take preventive actions against heat stroke.
Operation will continue to start nationwide in fiscal year 2025 as well.
Starting from the fiscal year 2024, a "Heat Stroke Special Alert" will be issued in cases where there is a significant risk of serious health damage due to particularly high temperatures.
Note: The Heat Index (WBGT) is an indicator of the risk of heatstroke, composed of temperature, humidity, radiant heat (such as sunlight), wind, and other factors.
