With the enforcement of the revised Road Traffic Act, from July 1, 2023, electric kickboards and similar vehicles that meet certain criteria will be classified as specific small motorized bicycles, and new traffic rules will apply, including the exemption from needing a driver's license.

What is a Specific Small Motorized Bicycle?

It refers to those that meet all of the following criteria.

  1. The vehicle dimensions must be 1.9m or less in length and 0.6m or less in width.
  2. The maximum speed cannot be changed while driving.
  3. The rated output of the motor must be 0.6 kW or less.
  4. It must be automatic (with an AT mechanism).
  5. The speed must not exceed 20 km/h.
  6. A maximum speed indicator light must be installed.
  7. It must comply with the safety standards under the Road Transport Vehicle Act.
  8. A contract for compulsory automobile liability insurance must be in place.
  9. A license plate must be attached.

Main Traffic Rules for Specific Small Motorized Bicycles

Follow traffic rules and manners to ride safely.

  1. Driving Under the Influence is prohibited.
  2. Under 16 years old are prohibited from driving.
  3. Obey traffic signals and road signs.
  4. Keep to the correct place when traveling. (Traveling on the roadway is the basic rule.)
