Proper Disposal of Polychlorinated Biphenyl (PCB) Waste
What is Polychlorinated Biphenyl (PCB)?
PCB stands for Poly Chlorinated Biphenyl, a man-made chemical substance that is mainly oily in nature.
Due to its high convenience, PCB was used in various applications such as insulating oil for electrical equipment, heat transfer media for heat exchangers, and carbonless copy paper. However, because it easily dissolves in fat, chronic intake causes it to gradually accumulate in the body, leading to various reported symptoms. Currently, both the manufacture and import of PCB are prohibited, and disposal deadlines have been set for PCB-containing products still in use, requiring proper treatment.
For more details about PCB, please refer to the Ministry of the Environment Website.
Proper Disposal of Polychlorinated Biphenyl (PCB) Waste
Regarding the storage and disposal of PCB waste, please submit notifications of storage and disposal status to the Tokyo Metropolitan Government based on the "Special Measures Law for the Promotion of Proper Treatment of Polychlorinated Biphenyl Waste" and the "Tokyo PCB Proper Management Guidance Guidelines."
There are disposal deadlines set for PCB waste, and these deadlines vary depending on the type of PCB waste, so please check and dispose of them properly.
High-concentration PCB waste (transformers, contaminated items, etc.) March 31, 2023
Low-concentration PCB waste March 31, 2027
For various notifications and disposal methods regarding PCB waste, please refer to the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Website or contact the department in charge below for details.
