Local Measurement Results of Radiation Levels in Parks and Green Spaces (Updated October 19, 2020)

The measurement results up to now have been stable and are below the Ministry of the Environment's standard value (0.23 microsieverts per hour). Therefore, based on the policy for measuring ambient radiation levels in parks and green spaces, the measurement of ambient radiation levels has been suspended since fiscal year 2017.
In addition, measurements near the monument in Keigi Park were conducted once a year (in August), but from the fiscal year 2021 onwards, we will suspend the measurement of ambient radiation levels in the city due to reasons such as stable values within the standard range and the fact that the values from the radiation monitoring posts in Shinjuku, which were established before the Great East Japan Earthquake, have decreased to levels prior to the earthquake. However, if any concerns arise, we will immediately resume measurements.

Description

When converted to an annual dose, 0.23 microsieverts per hour corresponds to 0.99864 millisieverts per year, which is below the reference level for radiation exposure to the general public under normal conditions recommended by the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP) (1 millisievert per year or less, excluding natural radiation). Therefore, this value is used as the city's decision criterion.
According to the Ministry of the Environment's "Decontamination Guidelines," if the radiation level at a depth of 1 meter below the surface is below 0.23 microsieverts per hour, no further action is required. However, our city takes a more cautious approach and makes decisions based on measurement results taken at the closest point to the object (1 centimeter below the surface).

About Cleaning and Other Services

Keigi Park

During the measurements conducted in 2012, results near the monument in the park showed values exceeding 0.23 microsieverts per hour, prompting us to carry out cleaning operations to reduce radiation levels.
After cleaning the monument using a high-pressure washer and brushing, it was confirmed that the radiation levels were below the standard value (refer to "past measurement results" for the figures).

Observation

Regular measurements are conducted at the locations where cleaning has been carried out, and the progress is being monitored. The results of the monitoring are as follows.
