About the History

The Tamagawa Cycling Course was established in 1970 to promote health maintenance and provide a place for communication among residents. It was developed as a pedestrian and bicycle-only road on the embankment after receiving occupancy permission based on the River Act from the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism. In March 2018, maintenance work around the Tamagawara Bridge was completed, enabling passage along an approximately 4-kilometer section from Koremasa Bridge to the border with Kawasaki City, connecting with Kawasaki City's "Kawasaki Tamagawa Fureai Road."

The Tamagawa Cycling Course is a road exclusively for pedestrians and bicycles.

This road is exclusively for pedestrians and bicycles; cars and motorcycles are not allowed to pass.
Note: This excludes authorized vehicles such as patrol motorcycles and vehicles permitted for maintenance work.

Both pedestrians and bicycles are requested to keep to the left side.

Since the width of the Tamagawa Cycling Course is narrow, about 2.5 meters, both pedestrians and bicycles are requested to keep to the left side.

Passing on the Left Side for Pedestrians

According to Article 10, Paragraph 1 of the Road Traffic Act, pedestrians must walk on the right side of the road where there is no distinction between the shoulder (white line) and the roadway. However, since the width of the Tamagawa Cycling Course is about 2.5 meters, we have decided to apply the exception of the same article, allowing pedestrians to also walk on the left side.

Article 10 of the Road Traffic Act (Traffic Lane Division) Paragraph 1

Pedestrians must walk along the right edge of the road on roads without sidewalks or shoulders wide enough for pedestrian traffic and without a distinction between the shoulder and the roadway.
However, when it is dangerous to travel along the right edge of the road or when unavoidable, you may travel along the left edge of the road.

About the Installation of Center Lines and Arrows

To inform pedestrians and bicycle users that traffic keeps to the left, center lines and arrows have been installed.

About the Installation of Signboards

To further inform pedestrians and bicycle users that traffic keeps to the left, signboards were installed in March 2023.

Regarding the Installation of the Road Surface Marking "Pedestrians First"

The Tamagawa Cycling Course is Pedestrians First.
Cyclists should pay attention to oncoming pedestrians and cyclists when overtaking pedestrians, and overtake slowly from the right side.

About the Width of the Tamagawa Cycling Course

The Tamagawa Cycling Course is paved on the flat part of the top of the embankment, and the width is about 2.5 meters, making it narrow.
To widen the width, large-scale construction such as widening the top of the embankment and embankment filling of the slopes is required, and since there is a risk of affecting the embankment's function, the current width has been maintained.
