In Soma City, Fukushima Prefecture, which is a Friendship City of Inagi City, there is a traditional festival called "Soma Nomaoi" that has a history of over a thousand years.
The Soma Nomaoi is designated as an important intangible folk cultural asset of the country. It is said to have originated when Taira no Masakado, considered the ancestor of the Soma clan, released wild horses in Shimousa Province (northwestern Chiba Prefecture) and conducted military training by using them as enemy soldiers. As a ritual to pray for the peace and tranquility of the region, it has been passed down through many changes and continues to be a vibrant event. Approximately 400 mounted warriors, clad in armor, gallop with swords at their waists and flags on their backs, creating a magnificent and heroic scene reminiscent of a historical painting.
This tour is planned as an event visiting Soma City from Inagi City, and all participants will be able to watch the "Main Festival" on the second day, which will be featured as a "Highlight" on the official site, from the mass seating.
The "Armored Horse Racing," where horse and rider become one as they dash through swirling dust, and the "Sacred Flag Capture Battle," where hundreds of mounted warriors compete to seize the descending sacred flags, are just some of the many highlights! Be sure to take this opportunity to watch the brave and daring mounted warriors from the reserved seats!
