Message from Principal Yusuke Otsuji of Hokkaido Ozora High School
Ozora High School accepts students from all over the country, and in the 2025 academic year, students have enrolled from 14 prefectures. More than 50% of the entire student body are dormitory residents.
Including former students, we have enrollment records from 17 prefectures. Among them, many students come from the Tokyo metropolitan area, including Tokyo itself, and of course, there are also students who have enrolled from Inagi City.
Why do students from all over the country continue to enroll?
This is solely due to the unique educational activities of Ozora High School. At Ozora High School, emphasis is placed on "fostering independence," practicing "active, interactive, and deep learning" in all classes, and promoting "boundary-crossing and inquiry" more than any other school.
For example, about 10% of current students participate in short-term overseas study programs each year, greatly surpassing the national average of 1.4%. As a result, 2 out of 36 graduates advanced to overseas universities.
With inquiry as the core, we also support comprehensive university entrance examinations, and as a result, 11% of students advance to national and public universities, including Tokyo Metropolitan University (approximately half of all students typically go on to university each year).
Centered on such cross-border and inquiry-based activities to "foster independence," there are also the following features.
Hokkaido Ozora High School "Top 5 Things That Don't Exist"
1. There are no regular tests.
This is to help students develop a habit of studying daily by conducting unit tests during class.
2. No timetable (70% of third-year high school students choose elective subjects).
This is to "accommodate diverse career paths."
3. There is no fixed homeroom teacher system.
The reason for having two homeroom teachers is to avoid mismatches between teachers and students. With two homeroom teachers, at least one of them can serve as a counselor for the students.
4. There are no detailed school rules.
It is to consider "what kind of appearance is appropriate" according to the time, place, and occasion (TPO).
5. No history.
Since it is the fifth year since the school opened, there are no long-standing traditions. However, there is room to "create the school," and students take the lead in planning new projects, events, activities, and systems.
At Ozora High School, these are called the "Five Things That Don't Exist," but they all ultimately lead to "fostering independence."
Because there are no regular tests, you must learn on your own.
Because there is no timetable, you must think about your own path.
Because there is no history, we must create our own school and make daily enjoyment.
