Do you know the sons of the botanist Siebold? The elder brother came to Japan with their father during the late Edo period and worked at the British Legation and the Meiji government, while the younger brother arrived in Japan in the early Meiji era and was employed as a Japanese interpreter at the Austro-Hungarian Empire's legation. In the negotiations to revise the unequal treaties with the great powers, the elder brother served on the Japanese side, and the younger brother served on the side of the great powers as interpreters and secretaries.
