About Tax Deductions for Donations

For the portion of the hometown tax (donation) amount that exceeds 2,000 yen, the full amount will be deducted from Income Tax and individual resident tax, up to a certain limit.

(1) Those who will file a tax return or a resident tax declaration

To apply for a deduction for donations from Income Tax and Resident Tax, it is necessary to file a final tax return.

  • The receipt you receive upon payment can be used as proof of your donation, so please keep it in a safe place.
  • Please file your final tax return (Income Tax return) with the tax office in your jurisdiction or your Municipal Resident Tax return with your municipality by March 15 of the year following your Furusato Nozei donation. Please attach the receipt at that time.
  • When you file your tax return, it will be deducted (refunded) from the Income Tax for the year you made your hometown tax donation. Additionally, the resident tax for the following year after making the hometown tax donation will also be deducted (reduced).
  • When you file your resident tax declaration, the resident tax for the following year after making a hometown tax donation will be deducted (reduced).

In addition, using the automatic input feature linked with My Number Portal is convenient when filing your tax return.
With My Number Portal integration, information on deductions such as hometown tax and Medical Expenses, as well as income information like withholding tax statements for salary income and Pension income, can be automatically entered. Additionally, information obtained through My Number Portal integration, such as donation receipt certificates, can be sent as attached document data along with the tax return data when submitting the tax return via e-Tax (electronic filing), eliminating the need to submit or store paper donation receipt certificates.
In order to use the My Number Portal linkage, prior preparation is necessary. Depending on the issuing authority of the deduction certificate, it may take several days after completing the linkage procedure before the data for the deduction certificate can be obtained, so please prepare in advance.
For details, please refer to the National Tax Agency's "My Number Portal Collaboration Special Site" and the "Tax Return Preparation Corner."

(2) Those who apply for the hometown tax donation one-stop special exception

Those who meet the following requirements can apply for the One-Stop Special Exception, which allows them to receive a deduction for hometown tax donations without filing a tax return.

  1. Those who are not required to submit a tax return
  2. Those who are not planning to submit a tax return due to other deductions, etc.
  3. Those who donate to 5 or fewer municipalities between January 1 and December 31
