Regarding the Furigana for the Child's Name on the Birth Notification
Due to the legal amendment, from May 26, 2025, the phonetic reading of the child's name entered on the birth notification will be recorded in the family register.
Furigana must be generally recognized as the reading of the characters used as a name.
When submitting a notification, if the common reading cannot be confirmed, you may be asked to provide additional information such as the origin of the name.
Examples Recognized as Common Readings
- Partial Sound Training
Cocoa, Sara, and others - Idiomatic Reading
Asuka, Yayoi, Satsuki, Yuri, and others - Placeholder Character
Misora (Sora), Ayumu (Yume), etc.
Examples Not Recognized as Common Readings
- Readings that can be recognized as approximately or not at all related to kanji
Taro (George), etc. - Reading with an added word different from the kanji
Ken (Kenichiro) and others - Readings that have the opposite meaning of the kanji or are misunderstood due to misreading
Hikushi, Taro (Jiro), etc. - Readings that cause significant discomfort, such as discriminatory or obscene ones
- Readings that are clearly inappropriate as names, such as antisocial readings
