On May 17, 2024, a law partially amending the Civil Code and other laws was enacted (effective April 1, 2026).
This law clarifies the responsibilities of parents regarding child-rearing to ensure the interests of children facing parental divorce, and revises provisions in the Civil Code concerning parental authority and custody, child support, parent-child interaction, adoption, division of property, and other related matters.

With this revision, after divorce, it will be possible to establish either joint custody or sole custody.
